visual studio code format on save not working

I understand that Visual Studio Code (what I use) is a different text editor from Visual Studio. UPDATE, based on the answer given by harrymc : There is no item 'Advanced' under the 'Edit' menu.Ī (for me) logical place to find such an option would be File/Preferences/TextEditor/Formatting, but there is no tabs->space option in that section. I have an item 'Preferences' under the 'File' Menu, but this in turn does not have an entry called 'Source Code'. I don't see a menu called 'Tools' (I just have File, Edit, Selection, View, Go, Run, Terminal and Help) Preferences -> Source Code -> Code Formatting Tools->Options->Text Editor->All Languages->Tabs I found some discussion on this topic, and the suggestions I found included to use one of: I am using Visual Studio 1.56.0 (user setup) and would like to configure an editor to input the appropriate number of spaces when I press the tab key, instead of inserting a physical tab character.

You might be able to get this behavior using an extension such as CodeRush or ReSharper.It's weird that Google did not bring up an answer to this question:

The only formatting I see that you might have wanted is to line up the object initializer expression with the declaration but that isn't an option in the VS formatting options AFAIK. If it doesn't do anything then format document probably won't either. In general, for a single block of code you can remove and add back a closing curly and/or a semicolon (and save if you have enabled the option) and the editor will reformat that block of code.

Hence the format command isn't going to do anything for it. You have lined up your curly braces and indentation inside an initializer expression is not enforced. In your specific case format document won't do anything because it doesn't see anything wrong. It will not however resolve all formatting issues as sometimes there is no valid formatting that makes sense. Format document will format the document based upon the rules that are defined by the VS settings and any applied.
